About AGNU
In 2005 a group of architects gathers around The Linux-GNU-MAC-CoA Collective. Its members demanded that the software provided by the Catalan Architects' Association (CoAC) should be cross-platform and not depend on specific applications.
Since not much has changed, except for the extremely good intentions (sadly not backed up with any specific actions) showed in multiple meetings with the CoAC representatives and the occasional extravaganza (in Spanish), we have decided to step up and, regardless of our very scarce resources, find solutions by our own means. So AGNU (with GNU Spain's permission) is born, its goal being a meeting point for knowledge and experiences around Free Software and its philosophy.
The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete Unix-like operating system which is free software: the GNU operating system. Hurd, GNU's kernel is actively developed, but is still some way from being ready for daily use, so GNU is often used with the kernel Linux. The combination of GNU and Linux is the GNU/Linux operating system, now used by millions. Sometimes this combination is incorrectly called Linux. There are many variants or “distributions” of GNU/Linux.
AGNU is open, not limited geographically nor intends to be only for architect (although we plan to offer tools and resources specifically for our profession). So we encourage everyone to join in, regardless of your profession. If you want to know more about us, you may take a look at a few reasons why we care about Free Software (UNTRANSLATED) and what this website intends to be (UNTRANSLATED).
We think it is important noting that software is just a tool, not a means in itself. And the Free Software ideas are applicable to many more areas. In the case of architecture perhaps the most notable example is the Open Architecture Network, you can see some recent results here (in Spanish).
